Georgia, Caucasus. January - March 2019
>> deutschsprachige Version
Ski Touring among the highest mountains in Europe, with remote valleys and authentic, medieval villages. Ski touring here is an adventure at its best. I have been skiing in Georgia since 2006, and Svaneti is special.
Our ski tours go to over 3000 m, in the shadows of iconic Caucasus summits - Shkhara (5193 m), Tetnuldi (4856 m) and Ushba (4710 m). Skiing at the edge and roof of Europe! Georgia is my second home (I live part-time in Tbilisi) and I work very closely with local people to maximize their benefit of bringing tourists to the region.
Svaneti simply has the right mix of mountains, snow quality, scenery, hospitality and culture. In addition to untracked, remote ski touring terrain, there is the fantastic freeride terrain in Tetnuldi ski resort. This is a modern, but still adventurous ski resort with Georgian touch and charme. The region is still hardly known for ski touring and offers great snow conditions from January until March. The Chalaadi glacier on the base of Ushba (4710 m) and Chatyn-Tau (4412 m) is among my favourite ski tours.

We are staying in a guesthouse in Mestia, with double rooms (each room has a shower). Food is provided by the hosts, with rich, local cuisine and large meals. Simple, but good. We will also have 2 nights in either Ushguli or Becho - here we are staying in local, very simple guest houses. They are remote villages, but with a true Svanetian atmosphere.
Day trips in February and March are still possible on request.
Sample Itinerary (8 days, 6 days skiing):
Day 1: Travel to Georgia; Pick up from airport in Kutaisi - for European guests I recommend to look at Wizzair connections. Memmingen/Munich - Kutaisi for example is a good option. Transfer in a 4x4 car to Mestia (5 hrs).
Day 2: Introductory ski tour from Tetnuldi resort. Gear check, safety briefing.
Days 3-4: Ski tours from Mestia, depending on snow and avalanche conditions. Example: Chaaladi glacier.
Days 5-7: Ski tours around Becho or Ushguli.
Day 8: Transfer to Kutaisi or Tbilisi.
I refrain from a detailed schedule and program - we will decide the tours on the spot according to conditions and guest abilities. My guides and I know the area very well and we are doing our best to find the best skiing everyday. I also cooperate closely with other ACMG & UIAGM guides in the area. This way we have the best possible information about snow and avalanche conditions.
Shorter trips or additional days can be booked, as well as city tours in Tbilisi. Inquire for details & offers.
